The History of R.V. Groves Elementary School

Roddy V. Groves helped develop the Wylie area as a third generation farmer and "cotton-ginner".  He was born April 27, 1912. At the age of 13, he began his participation in the cotton gin industry under the direction of his father. He married Hazel Francis Sperling in 1936. The couple remained in Wylie to farm and ranch cattle. Later, they purchased the cotton gin owned by Roddy's father, and continued to run it for the next thirty years. This cotton gin was the last surviving gin in the area.

Roddy was involved in the Wylie ISD School Board, the Wylie City Council, the Volunteer Fire Department, as well as the Wylie Lion's Club. Roddy was an active member of the Wylie United Methodist Church and was well respected around the entire community. R.V. (Roddy) Groves passed away June 14, 1997.

R.V. Groves Elementary School was established in 2002.
